Le Chardon Ecossais
Le Chardon Ecossais is our family home on the edge of the village of Fourneaux, between Guéret, the regional capital and Aubusson, famous all over the world for centuries for making tapestries. The house dates from 1908, built by a local mason and was one of the first houses in the area to be built of brick. There is a full history of the house in the Games Room. We have a fabulous heated indoor swimming pool and the pool room also houses an infrared sauna. You will find a warm Scottish welcome and a generous breakfast here. Dinner is available on request.
The Creuse is one of the few places in Europe that has more trees than it had fifty years ago. The forests are full birds and wildlife and the area is well known for its fishing with hundreds of kilometers of rivers and lakes of various sizes. Both Aubusson (10 minutes) and Guéret (20 minutes), as well as other country towns and villages within easy driving distance, have a large variety of shops and restaurants to choose from.
On the first floor are four bedrooms, 3 double rooms and 1 twin room, all en-suite. All the rooms have hairdryers, towels and toiletries. Some are suitable for families. The Dee Room has a king size bed and a sofa bed, allowing it to sleep up to 4. It has an en-suite bathroom with a full size bath, twin wash basins, a bidet and an over bath shower. The Forth Room has a double and a sofa bed and can also sleep up to 4. It has an en-suite facilities including a hydromassage shower cabinet. The Clyde Room has a double bed and The Tay Room has twin single beds. Both have en-suite shower rooms. Downstairs are two lounge areas for the exclusive use of guests. One has a large, open, wood burning fireplace and two leather sofas, the other, the Games Room, has relaxing seating as well as Broadband Internet access, a small library, CD player, PS2, a dartboard and various board games. Off the Games Room is a changing area with a shower and wc, which leads through to our fabulous tiled indoor swimming pool. At 8m x 4m it's a great size for swimming and as it's heated, it can be used all year round. In the pool room, are loungers for relaxing and an infrared sauna, very healthy! Five sets of double doors lead onto the two sun terraces and the garden, where we have a badminton court and a petanque court. There is also a large barbecue and a summer kitchen. Back in the house, we have a large sunny dining room for breakfast and dinner. A continental breakfast, tea or coffee, fresh bread, croissants/pain au chocolat and jams, is included in the room rate and evening meals are available. A full Scottish breakfast is available on request at a small additional cost per person. Dinner is 4 courses (starter, main course, cheese, dessert), including a 1/4 litre of wine or beer and coffee per person and will combine local ingredients with International menus.
The Area
Aubusson has a canoeing school and the marvellous countryside right outside our door is perfect for cycling or walking and ideal for birdwatching and fishing. We can organise permits for the rivers or full and half days at private lakes in the area. We also have equipment and bicycles, if required. Near to Creuse's regional capital, in the Monts de Guéret, is a fabulous animal park housing families of wolves from around the world. Les Loups de Chabriere is a great day out for all the family and a lovely way to watch the interaction of the different generations of an extended wolf family. For lovers of architecture, there are plenty of churches and small villages with buildings dating from the last 1200 years, including Moutier d'Ahun, which has a Roman bridge and a church with amazing wood carvings. The Tapestry Museum in Aubusson has a superb collection of tapestries made there over the centuries and you can visit the factory to see how they are made today. Travel Information
