Comfortable Canalside Bed and Breakfast in Brittany
Near St Malo, Rennes and Dinan
One en suite double room, ideal for 2. Indoor Swimming Pool.
Le Manoir de la Ramée
Our house is in the grounds of an old 17th Century Manor House on the banks of the Ille et Rance canal, where we have a comfortable Chambres d’Hotes Bed and Breakfast double room with en suite facilities, a guest sitting room and a dining room. We have a huge garden in which is a very large glass house that we call the Garden Room. In this, we have a lovely garden area and a swimming pool, barbecue and relaxation area that is ideal for use all year round. La Ramée is surrounded by fields and woods on three sides with the canal bordering the fourth side, so there are good views wherever you look.
The manor house was certainly in existence in 1629 and we have a drawing of it made in 1896. After that time it was virtually abandoned and sadly is now uninhabitable. St Domineuc, our local village, is half way between St Malo and Rennes. La Ramée is 3 kilometres from the N137 dual carriageway that links those two cities; both only 25 minutes by car. Dinan is closer and is always a favourite with us, as it has fine restaurants and the medieval charm of the buildings never fails to delight. Our closest town is Combourg, about 12 minutes drive, which has good supermarkets. As our house is beside the canal, several small villages along the towpath can be visited by bicycle and it is only a 15 minute stroll into St Domineuc.
The double room has a built in wardrobe, a dressing table with ample drawer space and plenty of space for suitcases. The bathroom facilities include shower, toilet, washbasin and a hair dryer. The guest sitting room has very a comfortable three-piece suite, a log fire for the cooler evenings, a television set and a selection of DVD and videotapes and, a piano for musical guests. Breakfast is usually served in the dining room and dinner is available on request. The Garden Room is a favouite place to unwind with a beautiful all round view, taking breakfast or having an evening barbecue. The garden itself is over 8000 square metres and has three separate secluded lawns to use for sunbathing or simply to relax.
The Area
The canal offers unique sporting opportunities such as fishing, cycling ( we have two cycles that guests can borrow ), kayaking, (we have one of those as well), and walking. For those who are more energetic, jogging and even an assault course for the true athlete. Les Ormes golf course is only 15 minutes drive and the club includes a restaurant. The lake at Bettineuc (2 km) has boating facilities and a quiet beach. There are fine beaches at Dinard where there is also an indoor salt-water pool with views out to sea. Our location between St Malo and Rennes gives a wonderful opportunity to explore most of North East Brittany and the western side of Normandy. Rennes, the capital of Brittany, houses the Parliament Building in the old part of the town. There is so much to see there from the architecture, shops and restaurants, to the Opera House that a whole day can be easily spent exploring the town. St Malo, a long established seaport, also has much to offer of an entirely different character. The walled city looks out to sea and down on the port and for many years, protected the dreaded corsairs (pirate sailors) from any reprisal. In later years, it was the sad scene of the annual departure of the fishing fleet heading out to Terre Neuve (Newfoundland) when, in those days of sail, many fishermen never returned. Dinan is another medieval fortress town and once every two years, returns to its ancient glory with the Fete des Ramparts when the whole town dresses up in medieval costumes and there is jousting in the square. Fougères and Vitré are only about 40 minutes from us and well worth a visit. Cancale the great oyster centre is a gastonomic treat and Bécherel only 15 minutes from us, is a lovely little hilltop town which has become known as The City of Books. But of course, the gem of the area has to be Mont St Michel, which is best visited before 10am unless you like crowds, but it is not to be missed. Travel Information
