Le Clé
The house is situated in a small hamlet on the outskirts of one of the beautiful villages, which are to be found all over the Charente. It was completed in 1763 and is built of limestone in the traditional Charentaise style. We're down in the Southwest of France where the number of sunshine hours per annum is second in France only to the Cote d’Azur. Spring comes early and temperatures can be in the 20's from March onwards. Summer is warm, with highs in the 30's, but we often get a breeze to keep things fresh. Autumn can stay warm during the day, but has cooler nights. Even in winter when the sun is out it's possible to sit outside in the middle of the day and enjoy a glass of local wine.
The Charente has a rich heritage of culture and architecture. There are many castles, forts, museums, lovely Romanesque churches and picturesque towns and villages that are well worth a visit. The house is surrounded by vineyards, the grapes from which are used to make cognac and pineau cognac. Anyone staying at the house in July and August will see plenty of sunflowers, always a spectacular sight with their heads turned towards the sun. Cognac and Angouleme are both 20 minutes from here.
Our Bed and Breakfast room is known as 'la grande chambre', a double room with a king-size four poster bed with an en-suite shower room with walk in shower, vanity basin and wc. There are two windows which overlook the south-facing courtyard and the vineyards and fields beyond. Facilities include television and a video player (we have a library of films), tea and coffee making equipment and a hair dryer. Breakfasts are essentially French with a bit of English thrown in! Coffee or tea is served with bread and croissants from the village bakery. We also provide a 'help yourself' bar with a choice of cereals, milk, fruit juice and fresh fruit. Packed lunches are available on request. Two adult bicycles are available to borrow. The locality is good cycling country, not too hilly and with beautifully quiet roads, which meander through the vineyards and fields. The Area
Between 5 and 20 minutes from the house are tennis courts, river walks, canoeing and boat rides, and a swimming pool. The beaches at Royan and La Rochelle are 90 minutes away by car or you can get there by means of a relaxing train journey from Chateauneuf-sur-Charente (10 minutes). Closer to home are beaches on the Charente River (5 and 10 minutes), the open-air public swimming pool at Chateauneuf-sur-Charente and the Nautilus Complex at Angouleme (20 mins), which also offers water sports. Châteauneuf-sur-Charente is a small town coiled in a loop of the river, which makes some of the brandies this region is famous for, still using the ancient, traditional methods of producing Cognac and Pineau. In the 17th century, the barrels of Cognac and Pineau were transported on the River Charente on flat bottomed boats called gabarres, which sailed down the river to La Rochelle where it would travel on to northern countries such as England. The design of the gabarre in recent years has been modified for use as a pleasure-boat and trips are offered by several firms during the summer months. Cognac is, of course, the home of the famous brandy and most of the cognac houses welcome visits and offer tastings. Henessey and Martel are two of the largest. You can also take a cruise on the river Charente, visit the castle of François I, see one of the many museums, art centres or monuments, or simply stroll through the old town and go shopping in the pedestrian streets in the town centre. On the place François I you will find many cafés, restaurants, shops and banks. It leads to the heart of the town via the rue d’Angoulême and the place d’Armes where you will find an impressive covered market. Couvoissier is situated in nearby Jarnac, a smaller town and birthplace of Francois Mitterand, a former president of France, which has shops, restaurants and cafes. Jarnac also has river boat trips, canoes, walking and fishing. Angouleme is known as the capital of ‘Bande Dessinee’, comic strips and cartoons, which adorn some of the buildings and are spectacular to see. In September the ‘Circuit des Ramparts’ takes place with vintage racing cars that come from all over Europe. You can always eat well here and foie gras, truffles, magret de canard, oysters and a variety of cheese are typical of Charente cuisine. In addition the region produces a number of excellent wines.
