Bed and Breakfast In An Enchanting House In The Loire
Montmirail, between Le Mans and Chartes, in the Sarthe
4 double rooms with en suite bathrooms. Dinner available on request.

Maison Conti

This enchanting 17th century house rests at the foot of Château de Montmirail and is regarded as one of the most beautiful buildings in the village. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the castle was owned by the Princess Conti, favorite daughter of Louis XIV, who built the house as a residence for her finance minister. We have combined our love of France and the influences of our American background into restoring the house back to its former glory and opening it for the first time as a romantic bed and breakfast for couples.

Maison Conti is situated in a tranquil, charming setting in one of the most idyllic areas of France, the Perche. Home of the famous Percheron horses, the gently rolling countryside is dotted with unspoiled hamlets and traversed by several rivers and ancient forests. Its mild weather and unhurried pace make it an ideal destination for a relaxing getaway.
Within easy driving distance of the Loire Valley, Chartres and Le Mans, Montmirail is a classified, architecturally preserved "petite cité de caractère", 90 minutes west of Paris.

We have four elegantly appointed double rooms with en suite bathrooms. Breakfast is included and dinner is available on request. We also hold printmaking workshops in our fully equipped etching studio, as well as arrange themed tours of the surrounding area.

All four rooms lead off a long, bright gallery on the first floor, at the top of an attractive staircase. The rooms occupy the four corners of the house. At the top of the stairs to the right:

The Yellow Room is a bright and sunny double room facing the 16th century church and square. The room is spacious and opens into a private vestibule. This leads to the bedroom, which has a comfortable queen-sized bed, attractive antique furniture, Persian carpet, botanical prints, attractive details and a new bathroom with large double shower, decorated in yellow and white mosaic tiles.

The Green Room is across the hall. This very attractive double room has a king size bed with a canopy in green plaid. The furniture includes a beautiful marble-topped commode and an 18th century armchair. A large carved mirror adds a sense of grandeur and there is a wall-to-wall seizel carpet. The views are towards the castle walls and garden. There is a closet and very large private bathroom with double sinks, and a claw-foot bathtub.

The Blue Room is at the far end of the gallery on the left corner. This adorable double room is decorated in toile fabric. A beautiful crystal chandelier adds to the charm. The room looks out towards the castle gates and the side of the church. It has a comfortable queen-sized bed and an attractive white Berber rug partially covers the ancient terracotta floor tiles. The charming bathroom has a large shower and a beautifully ornamented sink.

The Rose Room across the hall faces the 16th century church and square, This spacious room, in soft rose, has a very comfortable queen-sized bed, lovely antique furniture, a Persian rug, a rose velvet easy chair and very attractive prints and drawings which decorate the walls. The new bathroom is tiled in Italian rose-colored tumbled marble and has a double sized shower. A private vestibule offers a large closet and a view to the terrace garden below.

All bedrooms have en suite bathrooms, soft, luxurious towels, books in both French and English and games.

The Area

Situated at the highest point in the area, Montmirail has been inhabited continuously for thousands of years. During the Middle Ages, it was a strategic location, straddling the border between French and English lands. The local dukes had exclusive loyalties to neither crown, but were related by marriage to both and often mediated between them. Therefore, it was in 1169 that Saint Louis of France met with Henry Platagenet and Thomas Beckett at the castle of Montmirail in an attempt to reconcile the differences between the English monarch and his archbishop.

In the early part of the 18th century the Princess Conti made extensive changes to both the exterior and interior, adding many Renaissance elements to the original feudal structure, creating an unusual blend of the two styles. From the grounds of the chateau, there is a spectacular 360° view of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the spires of Chartres Cathedral are visible in the distance.

Le Perche is a beautiful area filled with historic châteaux, forests, lovely countryside and charming villages. Located 90 minutes west of Paris, it is a favorite playground for city-weary Parisians who like to escape for the weekend. The area therefore supports some excellent restaurants, antique dealers, smart boutiques and tearooms.
