Château de Pomiro
Once a hunting lodge, Pomiro dates from the 16th century and until recently was the country residence of the Marquis and Marquise de Noe. The chateau is set in 10 acres of beautifully kept gardens surrounded by a further 200 acres of vines, woodland and fields with a lake stocked with fish, mainly perch, roach, catfish and carp.
The vines produce Armagnac for the Chateau Pomiro appellation, as well as Floc, a delicious aperitif peculiar to the Gers. Each day, the kitchen garden provides fresh vegetables and seasonal fruits for breakfast and dinner and home bred chickens keep the kitchen supplied with eggs. The beehives produce an abundance of Pomiro honey and the well-stocked wine cellars provide a selection of local and other regional wines and armagnac. Dinner is available on request. This part of Southwest France is commonly known as Gascony and the Gers is historically the land of the Musketeers, the birthplace of d'Artagnan. Today, the region is famous for its gastronomy with foie gras, confit de canard, croustade and of course, fine Armagnac brandy. The historic towns of Eauze, the capital of Armagnac, Condom with its medieval church and Auch with its statue of d'Artagnan, are all within 40 minutes drive of the chateau. Lourdes is about an hour away in the foothills of the Pyrenees and the beaches around Biarritz and the Spanish border are only 2 hours from here. Very much a private family home, the chateau has 5 spacious guest bed and breakfast rooms in the main house and 3 rooms in the Petite Maison, a separate cottage in the grounds. Recently renovated in keeping with its origins, the furnishings are a mix of antique, traditional and contemporary pieces, providing a relaxed and stylish ambiance. The location is ideal for families and friends as a base for a holiday in this part of the Midi, or as a romantic weekend break. Weddings or special family celebrations can be catered for on request.
All guest bedrooms in the chateau have antique furnishings, UK satellite television, DVD player, hi-fi system and a hairdryer. Chambre de la Marquise is a double room with a large en-suite shower room. It overlooks the flower garden and the parkland. Chambre de le Marquis is a twin room with en-suite bathroom in the turret with half bath and shower over. It overlooks the lawns and woodland garden. A typical breakfast comprises fruit juice, cereals, croissants, fresh bread, preserves, fresh fruit, yoghurt, tea, tisanes, coffee, and chocolate. A 4 course evening meal is available on 5 evenings per week and includes an aperitif and wine. The Grand Salon is south facing, light and sunny with comfortable seating for up to 20 guests and has a traditional Gascon stone fireplace, which is lit for cosy winter evenings. The three French windows open beneath canopy of grape vines and lead onto lawns and a terrace overlooking the woodland garden. There is a small library in the turret adjacent to the salon with a selection of novels and DVD's. Hidden in an antique cabinet is a large plasma television. The Petite Salon with its soft muted colours and comfortable seating is ideal for quiet reading or listening to music. There is a small bar area with cool draught beer in the turret room next door. The large dining room with its antique tapestry and furnishings can seat over 20 guests comfortably. The French window opens out onto a dining terrace for the summer months. The pool garden has a large 12 X 6 metre pool with Roman steps and terrace with seating and sun loungers. The chateau has a games room in a converted barn, which has a pool table, table tennis, table football and gym equipment (multi gym, static bike, cross trainer, punch bag). Badminton, archery and boules in the grounds are available. The park has an abundant wildlife and massive mature trees and shady paths, ideal for escaping from the hot midday sun or for a relaxing stroll before dinner.
