Villa Bed and Breakfast with pool in Southern France
Ille-sur-Têt, near Perpignan in Languedoc-Roussillon
4 en suite double rooms

Villa le Canigou

Our villa was is quietly situated on the edge of Ille-sur-Têt, only 5 minutes from shops, bars and restaurants, 15 minutes from Perpignan and the beach. We have four bed and breakfast rooms, 2 twin and 2 double rooms, each with an en suite shower room, wc and vanity unit. All the rooms have large fans, and tea and coffee making facilities. There is a large garden, where children can play and a large, completely fenced off swimming pool with a patio scattered with tables, chairs and sun loungers and a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a built in barbecue. The villa looks out over peach orchards warmed by the Roussillon sun, to the foothills of the Pyrenees and the stunning peaks of the Canigou mountain range.

Ille-sur-Têt lies half way down the valley of the River Têt as it flows through Perpignan and on to the Mediterranean sea. An important town in medieval times, Ille retains many historical architectural features and is a few minutes stroll from the villa. The town has a range of shops, two markets a week, inviting open-air cafes and we can recommend several very good restaurants in the area.

The villa is modern in style and has a large guest sitting room and dining room with satellite television, DVD, a range of DVD's to choose from, a CD player, a wide range of books, board games and jigsaw puzzles. Breakfast is served continental style with home made jams and dinner is available on request.

The bedrooms are spacious, the furniture and linen new and the beds comfortable. Each room has a wardrobe and shelves or drawers for clothes, a writing table or desk and chair, a large fan and tea and coffee making facilities. All the rooms have a separate en suite shower room with wc and vanity unit and wonderful views, either of the old town or the mountains. We can provide an extra cot and/or spare bed for children on request.

Breakfast is generally served outside, or in the dining room in early or late season. Typically, it consists of local breads and croissants with butter and homemade jam, when available, tea or coffee and fruit juice. We also provide fresh fruit in season and yogurt.

Sample four course evening meal on request:
Salad starter
Main course of meat and vegetables with rice or potatoes
Cheese board of local cheeses and biscuits
Dessert
Bread, water and a choice of the first glass of wine included.
We will give special consideration to dietary needs on request.

The villa has a large garden with a swing and rope ladder for the children, and a large, fenced pool with sunbeds, tables and chairs. We also provide a selection of games, including a table tennis table.
The garden is laid out mainly to trees and shrubs, some fruit trees and a vine, flowerbeds and a small vegetable garden, which produces some the vegetables used in making dinner.

The Area

With stunning mountain scenery from start to finish, the Têt valley, offers a huge diversity of excursions and activities to delight the eye and refresh the senses. The more adventurous can climb to the top of Canigou, a peak revered by Catalonians in France and Spain alike, who still come to light the first of their Midsummer Eve bonfires on the summit. Another spectacular but more relaxing way, is to take the Petit Train Jaune, a 100 year old single track railway, which climbs some 1200m to the Cerdagne, an idyllic rural valley high in the Pyrenees. Keen naturalists can sometimes spot some the rare animals and birds here, including eagles.

The whole area is a walker’s paradise with paths and trails to suit all abilities. We have a range of specialised maps and practical experience of the possibilities, which we will be very happy to share with you

Numerous castles and ruins dot the landscape, many built by the Cathars, notably Chateau de Peyrepeteuse, a large ruined fortress perched on the crest of the Corbières hills. A visit is highly recommended, though requires a good head for heights! There are also several beautiful abbeys, priories and hermitages, including the Abbeye de St-Michel-de-Cuxa, which is also the venue for a series of concerts held annually by the famous Prades Music Festival, founded by Pablo Casals.
We have also had groups of cyclists to stay, keen to try the Tour de France routes. Beaches, skiing and excellent golf courses are within easy driving distance.

Ille-sur-Têt is 15 miles west of Perpignan, easily accessible via a dual carriageway. Lively and cosmopolitan, Perpignan was once the ancient capital of Roussillon, sometimes referred to as French Catalonia and the Catalan culture and language are still very much alive in this area. It is very easy from here to reach Spain, 40 minutes away and some of the beautiful beaches, countryside and spectacular golf courses on that side of the border. We can recommend many places to visit.

Languedoc-Roussillon is the world’s single biggest wine producing region. Over the past 10-15 years there has been a revolution in wine producing methods and there are now a wonderful variety of wines, ranging from powerful reds through elegant rosés and fragrant whites to luscious golden coloured dessert Muscats. The vignerons of Languedoc and Roussillon are welcoming and enthusiastic about their wines and a tour of the vineyards for a “dégustation” (tasting) could prove an enjoyable and inexhaustible pastime.
