Architect Designed Hilltop Villa in Southwest France
Penne d'Agenais, near Villeneuve-sur-Lot, in the Lot-et-Garonne
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people
The Eyrie
Built in the early 1960’s, the villa is the highest house in the medieval hilltop town of Penne d’Agenais and has spectacular southerly views stretching round from Tournon d’Agenais in the east, to Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the west. It is surrounded by beautifully maintained, established gardens offering complete privacy. A few minutes stroll downhill from the main gates and you are in the heart of Penne with its many bars, restaurants and artisan shops. At the bottom of the hill is Port-de-Penne, where you can find a good choice of shops including supermarkets, butchers, bakers and chemists and walk along the river or join the ramblers on one of three famous walks that centre on Penne, one of which is part of the Saint Jacques-de-Compostelle route.
Penne d’Agenais, meaning Crest, is an old settlement dating from Celtic times. Richard the Lionheart built the fortified Bastide town that we see today, in the 12th century. The Basilica that dominates the countryside for miles around was built in the 1896 on the site of a chapel that had been there for centuries. The plateau de St Michel is a favourite place for intrepid hang glider pilots to launch themselves into space from. The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside with numerous market towns such as Villeneuve-sur-Lot, 20 minutes away, Montaigu-de-Quercy and Libos. There are chateaux vineyards on the way to Cahors, which can be visited to buy and taste wine. Bergerac is about an hour from here, Agen 30 minutes.
The house is luxuriously and stylishly furnished and has a large open plan sitting room and dining room with an open fireplace and a conservatory. The kitchen is fully equipped with induction hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine. There are three large bedrooms, two double and one twin. Two of the bedrooms have balconies. One bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and there is a separate bathroom with separate toilet. A hairdryer is provided. Downstairs is a large games room with a table tennis table. There are terraces off both levels ideal for sunbathing and numerous secluded garden areas with shady trees and shrubs plus a barbecue. There is a telephone and Wi-fi Internet connection, television and DVD.
The Area
There is a 18 hole golf course at Castilliones, three riding establishments, rowing on a lake or river, all within 30 minutes drive, or hang gliding if you bring your own kit, within seconds of the door!! There is a swimming lake with a beach at Montaigu-de-Quercy and either indoor or outdoor tennis courts at Penne. A walk from the house will take you for 100's of kilometres on well defined routes along the river valley or ridge. There is horse racing and a well known 'Haras' breeding centre for horses in nearby Villeneuve, which welcomes visits. There is also an amazing Foie Gras Museum at Frespech, 15 minutes away, which also has a fine restaurant. There are other good restaurants in the area and we have a list of our favourite ones.
