Bed and Breakfast in a Traditional Normandy Longhouse
Near Saint Lô and the D-Day Landing beaches
En suite double rooms B&B. Independent gite: 2 bedrooms, sleeping 4/5 people.
La Vimonderie
Our traditional 18th century Normandy house is close to a small country village in the Vire Valley near Saint Lô. There is a large courtyard, a big garden and a field where children can run around and visit the ducks in the pond. The garden is a peaceful place to relax in after a day out and a short walk from here is the romantic River Vire for evening walks, picnics or a day’s fishing.
This whole area of Normandy, the Manche and Calvados, was the scene of the D-Day Landings and thus there are many fascinating memorials, museums and beaches to visit, all within easy driving distance. Our chambres d’hotes bed and breakfast rooms are in the main house and have been awarded 3 epis for comfort and charm. The house is furnished with a mix of antique and modern furniture; there is a guest sitting room and a large kitchen dining room, which is the heart of the house. Breakfast is generous with a variety of options and dinner is available on request. We have a reputation for good food and dishes range from classical French to Mediterranean, Moroccan, Austrian and Indian. Vegetables are fresh from the garden. The self-catering gite is in what was once the old cider barn and is furnished and equipped to the same standard of comfort as the main house. Wi-Fi Internet available. Our local village has a small supermarket, two boulangeries and a very good patisserie, a butcher and two restaurants.
The entrance to the main house opens into a hall with the original winding staircase leading to up the chambres d’hotes rooms. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities, mineral water and television. Hairdryers are provided. A microwave in the little kitchenette at the end of the hallway is available to guests. La Romantica is a double room with an en suite shower room, stylishly decorated, furnished with antiques and white carpets with a large window and exposed beams. There is a sofa bed, which can be used for a family with children under 10 years of age. La Marrakech is a double room and bathroom, decorated in warm, harmonious colours with Moroccan mirrors, carpets and photographs. The Gite is apart from the main house, in what was once the old cider and calvados barn. There is an open plan living room and kitchen downstairs opening onto a private terrace and two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. A local artisan specially made the kitchen for us and it is well equipped with everything needed including a dishwasher, washing machine and coffee maker. Basic provisions such as, sugar, salt and pepper, tea and coffee are provided and the ingredients for your first breakfast will be put into the fridge as a welcome, along with a bottle of wine for when you arrive. There are two bedrooms upstairs, the first is a double room with a fitted wardrobe along one wall and three windows overlooking the courtyard and garden. The second bedroom has two single beds and an antique family armoire. The bathroom has a large hydromassage shower, cupboards and shelves.
The Area
There are several excellent golf courses within 40 minutes drive. Most notably at Donville-les Bains and Bréhal, both courses close to Granville. These are dunes or links courses and are exceptionally well maintained with impressive clubhouses. Saint Lô has a new Aquatic Centre with two interior swimming pools and an outside pool with lots to keep the children amused and a choice of shops, cafés and restaurants to suit all pockets, with one or two in the lower town by the river, which are pleasant to linger in over a long lunch. On the Bayeux road just outside the town centre is the Haras, the National Stud, one of the biggest in France, which raises all breeds of horses and produces some of France's finest champions. It has events throughout the year and a riding school. The annual Normandie Horse Show is usually held in August. The D-Day Landing Beaches, Omaha and Utah Beach, St Laurent, Vierville, Colleville-sur-Mer and others are roughly 30 minutes from here. Travel Information
