A 17th Century Private Chateau in the Languedoc
Puilacher, between Pézenas, Montpellier and Cap d’Agde
6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sleeps up to 12 people. Solar heated swimming pool.
Château de Puilacher
Classified as an Historic Monument and entirely restored with all modern comforts, our house is a well loved family home in the heart of the Hérault vineyards, about 30 minutes from Montpellier. A lovely esplanade lined by ancient pine trees with far reaching views towards the hills, stretches in front of the chateau. A large, enclosed, solar heated swimming pool is at the far end of the esplanade.
Puilacher is a small village, surrounded by vines and impossibly charming with a lovely church in the little central square, 17th century houses and several Art Nouveau houses. The nearest shops are in Tressan (grocery shop and post office) 1,5 km from here, or in Pouget, 3 km, which has restaurants, a general grocery store, bank, doctors surgery. Pézenas, a small town with a greater choice of shops and restaurants, is 16 km away. The beaches at Cap d'Agde and others along the Mediterranean coast are roughly 40 minutes drive. Ideal for families or a group of friends, the house is large enough for everyone to have some space and privacy. Furnished with a mix of modern and old family furniture, sculpture and paintings we have collected on our travels over the years, there is a games room, a television room with a wide screen television and Wi-Fi Internet connection. The interior courtyard is shaded by a huge fig tree with tables, chairs and a barbecue. The kitchen opens onto the courtyard and is fully equipped with everything needed to satisfy any enthusiastic cook, including a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, microwave, kettle and coffee maker. A stained glass window made by a local artist separates the kitchen from the hallway.
The sitting room has a huge fireplace, the dining room is vast with a high beamed ceiling and a table that can seat up to ten people. There are three double bedrooms on this floor. The first has an en suite shower room and a terrace that overlooks the pool. The second also has an en suite shower room and a mezzanine with a balustrade copied from one in a local church, which has a spare single bed. The third bedroom overlooks the church and has a 17th century fireplace. There is a separate bathroom and wc. Part of the the second floor has been made into a games room with a pool table, table tennis and various children’s games and a television room with wide screen television and DVD. There are two further twin bedrooms on this floor, along with a shower room, wc, a small study room, a summer kitchen and a laundry room. The sixth bedroom with twin beds and a shower room is on the ground floor. It has a 19th century décor and was once the original owner's private salon. On one side of the main staircase is an exhibition of our collection of modern African art.
The Area
Canet, 4 km, has tennis courts and riding stables that can arrange treks through the countryside. Lac du Salagou (16 km) is a lake in a beautiful setting with supervised swimming and windsurfing. Sailing and water sports are well catered for at Cap d’Agde and La Grand Motte as well as at other beaches along the coast and there are numerous café terraces and restaurants to choose from. Wine is one of the reasons people choose to come to the Languedoc. There are excellent wines to taste at many of the domains and village caves around Puilacher and through the Corbières and the Minervois, at extremely reasonable prices, even for AOC wines. The ‘Terrasses du Larzac’ vines of Saint Saturnin, Montpeyroux and Aniane, are celebrated in particular. Pézenas had an active social and intellectual life in the Middle Ages, which attracted people like Molière and his theatre company. As a result the town has many elegant 17th and 18th century buildings and an old quarter that has hardly changed since then. It is also the home of some excellent wines, especially those of the Prieuré de St Jean de Bebian and the Château St André. Pomérols is a tiny traditional growing area, close to Pézenas that produces an unusual, soft white wine with a sea green light, which goes well with freshwater fish. Béziers on the Canal du Midi, 40 minutes from here, is a thriving southern market town and another centre for local wines. Its mix of architecture ranging from the remains of a Roman amphitheatre to medieval and Renaissance houses, to the great fortified Gothic cathedral and modern villas on the outskirts, tell the story of its long, sometimes turbulent history. Today it has a bright, lively, energetic air, dozens of restaurants and bars, shops, art galleries, theatre, a monthly antiques market and a glorious flower market every Friday. Rugby is a passion here and in August there is a week long festival when the whole town takes to the streets to celebrate. The Canal du Midi passes through the town and you can follow its course for miles, walking or cycling on the towpath beside it. Travel Information
