5 Apartments in a Provençal Farmhouse in the Drôme
Charols, 20 minutes from Montélimar, an hour from Avignon
1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, sleeping: 2, 4 or 6 people. With pool.
La Roche Colombe
La Roche Colombe is an architect restored Provence farmhouse, imaginatively built around an arched courtyard on the site of a Roman villa, where we have five independent gite apartments, each with their own individual charm and character. We are peacefully set amongst sunflower and lavender fields, surrounded by stunning panoramic views of the mountains and ever changing colours throughout the day.
The atmosphere that we like to create is restful and friendly. In the shady gardens and extensive grounds, there are plenty of quiet places to sit and read or chat over a glass of chilled rosé, or laze by the pool, relishing the view or even playing a game of boules. We are thrilled that La Roche Colombe has been featured in editorals of French Property News, France Magazine and in the Figaro. Many of our visitors return time and again and many particularly enjoy Bob’s home cooked dinners, four evenings a week, prepared with fresh garden and local produce. La Roche Colombe is in a country location in Charols, near the medieval crusader village of Manas. Only 4 minutes away is our nearest village, Cleon d'Andran, which has banks, shops, a supermarket and restaurants. Within a few minutes drive, other restaurants offer different styles of cuisine and ambience with menus to suit all pockets.
We have converted the original farmhouse into 5 luxury gite apartments, all with independant access and either a private balcony or terraces equipped with barbeques and out door eating facilities, allowing you peace and privacy. The furnishings are very comfortable and imaginative, hand painted furniture and original art work add individual character to each apartment and lime washed walls reflect subtle Provencal ochre pigments. All the gites are fully equipped with a washing machine and dishwasher, a full sized oven and hob, microwave and fridge freezer, stereo and satellite television, Dvd, as well as a barbeque and outside dining furniture. Hairdryers are provided and a cot and highchair can be provided. Our library has a huge selection of books, maps, local information and Dvd's. St Cecile is a ground floor, 1 bedroomed apartment with a shady terrace and a king size double bed with an en suite bathroom, a sitting/dining room and a separate kichen. St Maurice is a 1 bedroomed gite with a king size bed and en suite bathroom, a sitting/dining room, kitchen and a private covered balcony. L'Hermitage is a 2 bedroomed apartment with 2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a large airy sitting/dining room with a fire place, a separate kitchen and a balcony with fabulous views. Ventoux is also a 2 bedroom gite with 1 double bedroom and 1 bedroom with 2 large single beds, 2 bathrooms, a large airy vaulted sitting/dining room and a separate kitchen leading onto a private covered terrace. L'Hirondelle is a 3 bedroomed apartment with 2 double bedrooms and 1 twin bedroom, 2 bathrooms and an extra shower room, a sitting/dining room, a separate kitchen and 2 balconies. The large swimming pool is 12x6m with superb views, honesty bar and plenty of sun loungers.
The Area
Most of the local towns and villages have weekly provencal markets. Our favourite ones being in Dieulefit for its pottery and Nyons for its olive oil and local produce. We are surrounded by colorful, historic sites, from Roman ruins at Vaison-la-Romaine, Renaissance chateaux at Grignan, Suze-la-Rousse and Montélimar and Crusader villages such as Poet Laval, named as one of the most beautiful villages in France. For nature lovers or orchid hunters the national park of the Vercors is just to the north with spectacular views and moving memorials to the wartime resistance workers, while to the south we have the beautiful historic towns and sites such as Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes and the Pont du Gard. Within 15 minutes there is an 18-hole golf course with a good restaurant and Pro Shop. For adventurers, there is canoeing on the Drôme river and in the Ardèche Gorges. We are happy to loan our bikes for local rides and there are many well marked cycling routes. Riding in the forests, mountains and river gorges can be arranged via local stables with ponies for the little ones. Children and parents can enjoy the forest assault course nearby with plenty of zip wiring and rope walks. Another family favourite is racing down the mountain ski slopes on specially designed scooters, or maybe just coming down on the ski lift. Ramblers and hikers have the choice of many marked trails with a chance of seeing deer, eagles, buzzards and much other wild life. Paint balling, gliding, karting, river swimming and quad biking are all available nearby. The calm beauty and magnificent scenery of the Drôme Povençal has been acclaimed recently by both the Telegraph (Nov 2008) and the Sunday Times (Aug 2007). It is full of quiet Crusader villages and fascinating historic towns, such as Avignon with its Popes palace and Orange and its magnificent Roman amphitheatre, where one can still see open air concerts and operas of international repute. Vaison-la-Romaine, Glanum, Vienne, Nimes and the Pont du Gard all have fascinating Roman and pre-Roman sites, many with stunning preserved mosaics. A great day out is to go on a wine tasting tour of the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, where we can arrange an open air lunch and then later in the day, on the way home, visit to a master chocolatier. Valrhona, the world famous chocolate maker is also worth a visit along with the nougat factories of Montélimar. Local potters and artists open their workhops and studios to the public and one can buy direct from them at exceptional prices. We also have an amazing crocodile farm in the area, a bird sanctury and many caves and grottos that can be visited. Travel Information
