Welcoming Bed and Breakfast in the Orne, Normandy
Putanges-Pont-Écrepin, 45 minutes from Caen and beaches beyond
5 en suite bedrooms including a family suite

Le Bosquet

Welcome to our chambres d’hôtes that sits above the picturesque riverside town of Putanges-Pont-Écrepin in the Orne department of Normandy. As an ideal location from which to explore this lovely area and set in peaceful walled grounds, Le Bosquet is the perfect place simply to take time out and relax. We are Richard and Magda and we love our home here in this delightful corner of France and enjoy sharing it with others.

Putanges-Pont-Écrepin is close to the border with Calvados, only 45 minutes from the ferry port at Caen and beaches along the coast, 95 minutes from Le Havre. Paris is 80 minutes on the TGV to Montparnasse. Whatever time of year, Putanges is a pretty place, which has held its small weekly market on the same day since 1580. There are two boulangeries, a charcuterie, a grocery and a small supermarket, so shopping for a picnic is easy. There is also an excellent Tourist Information Office that is open all year round.

There is a choice of either restaurants within a short stroll, taking you to the river and the Brasserie, which offers an excellent informal lunch as well as crêpes in the evenings, or a small hotel restaurant for something more formal. There are more restaurants a short drive away, including a wonderful gourmet restaurant, or the chance to enjoy either lunch or dinner while cruising on the nearby lake. We also offer dinner on request here at Le Bosquet.

Our five en suite bedrooms are individually decorated and have tea and coffee making facilities as well as hairdryers.

We have three rooms on the first floor with a choice of facilities:-
Le Tilleul has pretty views down to the river below and a king size bed. The en suite bathroom has a bath chosen for leisurely soaks.
Le Saule is a twin bedded room, which looks over the garden. The en suite bathroom has a bath with shower over.
Le Sorbe has a double bed and views across the garden to the countryside beyond. The en suite bathroom has a shower large enough to share.

On the second floor we have two mansard rooms:-
Le Frêne is a family suite of two inter-connecting rooms, one with a king size bed for Mum and Dad and the other twin beds for the children. We also have a cot and a z-bed. The large family bathroom has both bath and separate shower.
Le Tremble is a slightly smaller room but still with a king size bed and a shower in the en suite bathroom.

Most of all, we want you to make yourself at home, so there is a comfortable lounge where you can relax and chat about your day, perhaps while enjoying a glass of wine and making plans for the next. We have glasses and a bottle opener ready, together with a selection of leaflets, books and maps to help you plan your days.

Breakfast is usually croissants and bread fresh from the boulangerie with Normandy butter and a selection of jams, yoghurt and fruit, together with fruit juice and a choice of tea, fresh coffee or hot chocolate. This is served the adjacent dining room or, on warm sunny mornings, in the garden if you prefer.

If you would care to join us for a meal in the evening, we offer supper or dinner by prior arrangement (we just need time to do the shopping!) or again if the weather is fine, we can lay on a barbecue.

The large walled garden is ideal for you to have a barbeque or picnic of your own and the barbeque, table and chairs are all there ready for you. It is also an ideal place for children to play and search to see if one of our chickens has laid an egg.

The Area

There is a wealth of leisure and sporting activities on offer in and around Putanges all in glorious countryside and a choice of clearly marked walking and mountain biking trails, one of which starts outside our gate. Some of the paths give access to wild gorges, which with their strong and unpredictable currents test the skills of kayaking experts during the spring competitions. Other water sports include the chance to hire a canoe and take it down the river to the lake where there is the opportunity to try your hand at water skiing or, for a more leisurely form of transport, take a pedalo out on the river. Indoors, you can swim in an excellent pool or have fun at an aquatic centre, visit a casino or be pampered at a spa.

Lake Rabodanges also offers you the chance to fish for a variety of fish all year round, added to which some 3500 of the 4000 km of fishing on the Orne is classified 'first class' and a paradise for trout fishermen amongst others.

Putanges is situated at the start of the Suisse Normande with fabulous scenery and offering a wide variety of outdoor activities from climbing to hang gliding, horse riding to velo-rail. There is plenty of opportunity for leisure riding or taking a ride in a horse drawn carriage. There are several golf courses near by, including a 9-hole course set right in the heart of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, a delightful lakeside spa town.

There are 30 horse racing courses within Lower Normandy and the La Bergerie course close by has three meetings in the Autumn, each one with a mixture of flat and national hunt races, finishing with a cross country race. After a leisurely lunch it makes for a fun afternoon, as in addition to the races, each day has something special on offer, whether it is special events and games for children, stalls selling local produce or a display of horse drawn carriages from the nearby National stud.

There is much to do and see. In nearby Calvados and within an easy drive are the historic towns of Caen, Honfleur and Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches with its many moving memorials and museums. There is also always the chance to shop, whether at one of many markets in the area or in a town offering wonderful shopping from department stores to designer shops.

There is also the opportunity to spend a day in Paris. Catch the 7.50 am train from Argentan and be in Montparnasse station in the heart of Paris by 9.10 am.
