Traditional Provençal House with heated pool in the South of France
Near Cavaillon, between Avignon and Saint Rémy de Provence
5 bedrooms with bathrooms, sleeping 10 to 14 people. Awarded 4 stars for comfort and charm.
Le mas des oliviers
This lovely Provencal house is between Cavaillon and the Isle-sur-Sorgue (famous for being the largest location for antiques outside of Paris). The mas is only 20 minutes from Avignon, within reach of many places that evoke the essence of Provence: the beautiful Luberon with villages like Gordes and Lourmarin, all impossibly charming and picturesque, others like les Beaux de Provence and Saint Rémy de Provence. Marseille is roughly an hour from here.
We have recently completely refurbished the house, keeping its traditional character outside and making the interior light, comfortable and contemporary. There are terraces and quiet places in the garden to spend an afternoon reading a novel or taking a siesta and you can also keep an eye on the children without having to move far. There are numerous local restaurants to choose from within driving distance. Some old favourits include Le Margaux or Le Ravi Provencau in Maussane, the Bistrot du Paradou and La Petite France in Le Paradou, or Le Cabre d'Or and the Beau Manoir at Les Baux. In Eygalieres, try the Bistrot Eygalieres or Le Petit Bru.
The house has a large, fully equipped kitchen, which would satisfy any cook that has a fridge/freezer, an oven, microwave and dishwasher, plus various things like a toaster and a coffee machine. The utility room has a washing machine and ironing facilities. The salon is also large with a fireplace, television, a home cinema and a music system. WiFi Internet connection is available. Upstairs are 5 bedrooms with bathrooms: La chambre Est looks over the swimming pool and has a double bed that can be made into twin beds, and a spare single bed. La chambre Sud overlooks the garden and also has a large double bed that can be made into two single beds with an extra single bed. La chambre Sud has windows opening onto the garden and has a large electric double bed. La chambre Sud-ouest has windows opening onto the garden and has a large double bed that can be made into two single beds and an extra single bed if needed. La chambre Ouest looks onto the garden and has a double and a single bed The extra single bed in some of the bedrooms is a divan bed that acts as a sofa with cushions during the day. There are outside lights around the pool and fountain. The pool (heated between mid April until mid October) has an electric security cover. The East terrace beside the pool has sunbeds and pool mattresses. The South terrace is shaded by centuries old plane trees, looks over the fountain and olive trees and has wrought iron tables and chairs.
The Area
There is something for the whole family in this part of Provence. There are riding stables, which can organise treks into the Alpilles hills, village tennis courts, cycling (bicycles are available at the house, gliding and golf courses (the nearest is 10 minutes from here). The beaches at Salins de Giraud or Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (which also has excellent seafood restaurants) are about a 45 minute drive. There are a number of local vineyards within easy driving distance, which produce red, white and rosé wines. Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas are some of the better known wines and out of all the rosé wines there are to choose from, Tavel is considered to be the best. The wines around Aix en Provence and the white wines from Cassis are also worth looking for. The golden olive oil Maussane makes, is deliciously fruity and has an appellation contrôlée. You can get it anywhere in the village. St Rémy is an attractive little town with shops ranging from fashion shops to artisan shops, art galleries, restaurants and a way of life that is pleasantly relaxed. Van Gogh loved this area and spent the last years of his life here. You can go to many of the places where he painted some of his best known work and see them much as he would have seen them then. Avignon (20 km) is a beautiful university town with much to see, the vast Palais des Papes in particular, which has smart shops, markets, numerous restaurant and cafes and a huge music and theatre festival in July and August, amongst a succession of other events throughout the year.
