La Maison Blanche
La Maison Blanche is a 19th Century period house with many original features located in the historic country town of Richelieu, in a quiet position and less than 500 metres from the entrance to the town and is a ideal base for visiting the famous châteaux, vineyards and many other places of interest in this part of the Loire Valley.
Situated in the pretty Touraine countryside on the departmental border with the Vienne, Richelieu is well served with a good choice of shops, restaurants and banks, all within a short walking distance. The town has a lively country market on Friday mornings. The original site of Cardinal Richelieu's chateau and open to the public, there is a large mature park a short walk from the town centre. Chinon is 20 minutes away by car, Saumur is 40 minutes away, Tours about an hour away and we are 35 minutes from the A10 and A85 autoroutes.
Both guest bedrooms are located on the first floor of the house. They are comfortably furnished with tea/coffee making facilities, a hairdryer and tower fan. The en-suite bathrooms have a bathtub with integral shower, a hand basin, wc and heated towel rail. There is a guest sitting room next to the bedrooms, which has English TV, DVD/VCR player, wifi and a small selection of books, magazines and games. A choice of continental or cooked breakfast is available together with use of the private terrace and walled garden.
The Area
The local area provides a wide choice of sporting activities. These range from horse riding, swimming, fishing, golf at an 18 hole local course, Go-Karting, cross country walking (set routes with maps and of varying distances are available) and hiring cycles and canoes/kayaks. There are a large number of interesting châteaux located in this part of the Loire Valley. These include the smaller family run Château de Riveau and gardens nearby, the Château de Candé at Monts, which reached the height of its fame in 1937 when the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson celebrated their wedding there, the magnificent Château de Chenonceau on the River Cher and the Château de Villandry with its classical gardens. The pretty fortress town of Chinon on the River Vienne is a short drive away. It has a large lively market on Thursday mornings and holds a Brocante (bric-a brac/flea market) on the 3rd Sunday of every month. The French national riding school, home of the famous Cadre Noir, is situated at Saumur and holds public displays throughout the summer. Less than an hour's drive to the south near Poitiers is the popular Futuroscope multimedia theme park, comprising both 3D and 4D cinemas as well as many other attractions. The many varied wine producers in the area are happy for visitors to drop in and sample their produce. Some of the larger ones offer organised tours of their cellars. Travel Information
