Chateau de Montastruc
Built on a plateau above the lovely Caudeau valley, 11 km north-east of Bergerac, the chateau dates essentially from the 14th and 18th century although parts of the foundation dates from the 5th century. The courtyard is accessed by a bridge over the moat and the park includes a large swimming pool with an 18th century dovecote, set on a terrace overlooking the chateau and the valley.
The chateau is part of the peaceful little village of Lamonzie-Montastruc, near the excellent Pécharmant vineyards of Bergerac. Bordeaux is roughly 90 minutes from here.
The chateau has been entirely restored with great care and offers modern comforts furnished with many family antiques in an exceptional setting. A large park with lawns, woodland and dappled pathways and walks, where children can play and run around freely, surround it. A magnificent home that is ideal for family holidays and reunions or for a group of friends travelling together, for romantic weddings and special celebrations.
Montastruc has several living rooms and salons of different styles, a French billiard room, large dining room, pianos, satellite television, dvd and wifi internet, an impressive library, a grand 18th century stairway, and a terrace over the machicolation accessible from the ground floor salons.
There are 10 very comfortable bedrooms (7 with double beds, 2 rooms with twin beds and a single room), each with their own individual charm and character, served by a total of seven bathrooms, and nine wc’s.
The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a large fridge/freezer. The house is centrally heated and has two monumental fireplaces, making it very pleasant at Christmas and for winter visits.
The swimming pool is large, equipped with an electrical rolling cover for safety and is at a short distance from the house on higher ground. A gardener and housekeeper are on hand.
Ten minutes away by car, is the town of Bergerac, full of shops, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants and of course, its beautiful old town (complete with Cyrano statues) and riverside.
Riding and tennis are all available within a short drive and you can find water sports and canoe hire bases in Bergerac. There is a 9-hole golf course, 10 minutes away and a first class 27-hole championship course, 20 minutes from here (Les Vigiers).
The Dordogne has something for everyone, from the prehistoric caves of Lascaux and Les Eyzies innumerable chateaux, manoirs, chapels, rivers, valleys, ancient towns and hidden villages and the people here are friendly and hospitable.
For eating out, try the Tour des Vents restaurant, which has a marvellous view over the Dordogne landscape, and L'Imparfait in Bergerac tops the culinary bill. With children it is hard to beat the elegant but informal Pizzeria in Eymet, which has a good market on Thursday mornings in the arcaded market square.
For wine enthusiasts, there are various wine routes for discovering a multitude of vineyards making dry and sweet white wine, rosé, and a variety of reds from Bergerac to Cahors and Bordeaux (St Emilion is only an hour’s drive).
For a good day out, the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean west of Bordeaux are less than 2 hours from Montastruc.
