Large Holiday Cottage with pool in the Loire
Thouarcé, in the heart of the Layon wine area, near Angers

Le Clos des 3 Rois
Our home is in Thouarcé, a village at the centre of the Layon wine producing area, celebrated for its Bonnezeaux crus. The house dates from 1845 and is typical of this part of the Loire. The gite cottage is independent of the main house, spread between recently renovated adjacent buildings that have been classified for their comfort and charm.
One side has five en suite, air-conditioned bedrooms, the other has a large salon with television, a fully equipped kitchen and dining room, a laundry room and a billiard room with books, games and an electric organ. Families and large groups are well catered for. Thouarcé is at the triangle between Angers, Saumur and Cholet, 90 minutes from Tours and within easy driving distance of some of the loveliest of the Loire chateaux. The village has a range of shops including a supermarket and cafes and restaurants. Market day is every Tuesday. The Layon Valley is synonymous with the sweet white wines and Anjou rosés produced here, an area of vine covered hills that makes a particularly attractive landscape with a succession of wine villages. The best place to taste the Bonnezeaux wines is at the Château de Fesles, which dates back to the 11th century and, given the rarity of its sweet wines, you will also have the chance to taste other Anjou wines. Other villages that stand out for the quality and strength of their wines are Beaulieu, Rablay and St Aubin.
Each of the bedrooms have been individually decorated and comfortably furnished in a personal style. All the rooms are either double or twin, have hair dryers, air-conditioning, television and have either a bathroom or a shower room with a separate wc. The games room also has books and games for children, included in the kitchen is a coffee maker and dishwasher and the laundry has both washing machine and dryer. A cot, baby bath and play mat are available on request. The pool is open between May and September. There are two courtyards with outside furniture and a barbecue, and parking.
The Area
On request, we can arrange visits for individuals or groups of up to 15 people, based on a theme such as cooking, wine tasting, gardens and the floral arts. Thouarcé has several restaurants like Le Relais de Bonnezeaux, which has lovely views over the vines and a good reputation for its food and vintage wines. The village also has a covered swimming pool and a tennis court. There is good fishing in the Layon river and the valley is ideal for walks and cycling. The Club de l'Orchère riding stables at Notre Dame d'Allençon are 5 km from here and the Angers Golf Club at St Jean des Mauvrets is 15 km away. There are also hot air balloon bases, we can help organise bookings. Château de Brissac is enormous, a mixture of classical and medieval architectural styles, which gives it a marvellous eccentricity. It claims to be the tallest in the Loire Valley, reaching seven storeys in one part. Still in private hands, some of its sumptuous 230 rooms are open to the public. The châteaux at Angers and Saumur, Serrant and Montreuil-Bellay (famous for its dreamy Disney-like turrets) are also worth seeing. Doué-la-Fontaine is famous for growing roses and millions of them are grown around the town. The Chemins de la Rose, on the road to Cholet, is a wonderful rose garden planted with rare and botanical varieties. Other gardens worth seeing are the aromatic and medicinal gardens at Chemillé and the oriental gardens in Maulévrier. We will be happy to help you with anything you need to know. Travel Information

Prices are per week, Saturday to Saturday arriving at 4pm, departing at 10am Bed are made ready for arrival and towels provided. A cot, baby bath and play mat are available on request. Cleaning can be arranged on request at an extra charge. Breakfast stores ready for arrival can be provided on request at an extra charge. Bicycle hire available Food, wine and garden tours arranged on request. Weekend: €600 - €870 according to season (Friday 5pm - Monday 10am - 3 nights) Midweek: €800 - €1160 according to season (Monday 5pm - Friday 10am - 4 nights) A deposit of 25% is requested on booking with the remainder paid 1 month before arrival.
