Independent Cottage on a Manor Farm in the Loire Valley
Near Langeais, between Tours and Saumur, in the Indre-et-Loire
2 bedrooms, sleeps 2 to 4 people. Private fishing on the estate.
Domaine de Vernou
A private drive lined with trees, leads through the park to the manor house where we live.
The cottage is a short distance from the main house and is entirely private and independent. We raise deer on the farm, which roam freely on the estate and we also keep horses and ponies. There is a small lake for those who like to fish. We will be happy to help with anything you need to know.
The Loire Valley is famous for its fairytale châteaux, wine and food. The Domaine de Vernou is a thousand acre estate in the heart of the Valley about 4 km from Langeais, which lies on the banks of the River Loire, 30 km downstream from Tours. Saumur is 45 km from here.
Langeais is a 10 minute drive and has all the shops and supermarkets you could want, a choice of restaurants and a very good market on Sunday mornings. The château in the centre of the town has an exceptional collection of medieval furniture and works of art. There is an 18-hole golf course 15 minutes away.
The cottage makes a comfortable base from which to explore the region, to play golf, do some fishing or, to simply relax and enjoy being here. Surrounded by fields and woods, you can often catch a glimpse of the deer and on autumn evenings hear the call of the stags. The woods are full of mushrooms in autumn that you are welcome to gather and cook for breakfast or lunch - there is nothing better.
Comfortably furnished in a country style and character, the cottage has a main living room / dining room with a fireplace and a large window looking out onto the park and a fully equipped kitchen that includes a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and toaster, amongst other things. There is also television, dvd and WiFi Internet connection.
There are two double rooms, one of which has an ensuite bathroom. The other is a twin room. There is also a second bathroom and toilet. A hairdryer is provided.
A barbecue and garden furniture are provided.
Langeais has a lake with windsurfing facilities, tennis courts and a swimming pool and riding stables where you can hire horses for an hour or two or for the day. Within a reasonable drive are three 18-hole golf courses. Bicycles can be hired locally for long or short periods. There are also hot-air balloon flights over the Loire.
Some of the best wines the Loire produces are made near here and you can visit the vineyards around Cheverny (30 km) to taste and also visit the classical 17th century château itself, which has some fine paintings. Vouvray and Montlouis produce fine white wines and at Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, you can sample some of the best of the Touraine reds.
Of the numerous restaurants to choose from, we would highly recommend the Auberge du XIIème siècle in Saché and the Aigle d'Or in Azay le Rideau.
Amongst other châteaux is Villandry (15 km), a fine classical 16th century building whose great pride is its Renaissance garden (flowers and vegetables), full of symbolic design and faithfully reconstructed from old drawings and records of the time.
Chenonceau, still privately owned but open to visitors, is a must. It is built over the River Cher and has a splendid avenue leading up to a drawbridge and beautiful gardens laid out by Catherine de Médici.
Graceful Azay-le-Rideau, stands on a lake and is possibly one of the most romantic château in the Loire, though Château d'Ussé a little further on, inspired the story of Sleeping Beauty. Each needs at least day to see, combined with a good lunch.
Tours has everything you could possibly want: a feast of lovely buildings in the old part of the town, good shopping and restaurants. Amboise lies on the Loire river and is dominated by its château, one of the oldest and most beautiful in the valley. It has very good food shops and restaurants and many lovely old buildings. Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life here and his house in Clos-Lucé, now a museum dedicated to his life and work, has a delightful garden.
