The apartments are in the former Governors Palace, set in private grounds close to beaches on the Ile de Ré, about 25 minutes from La Rochelle. St Martin-de-Ré is one the island's most captivating villages and the apartments make a comfortable base for families and friends, or for couples taking an early break in Spring or a late one in Autumn and, for those who love the sea. This is a place where you can relax and switch off, enjoy the island, the beaches and the food. The Palais de Gouverneurs has a swimming pool, table tennis, a bar lounge and a shop which carries most essentials. Saint Martin has a choice of other shops, bars and bistros.
Cycling, or by scooter, is the best way to see the island via country lanes, have lunch at a bistro and get to the beaches (Cible Beach is the nearest, 1 km from here, Bois Plage is another), while a car is necessary for visiting places such as La Rochelle on the mainland, via the bridge or getting to the island of Ile d'Oleron. Bordeaux is 2 hours from here.
All the apartments have a living room with television and a fully equipped kitchen area (2 or 4 hotplates, fridge, mini-oven, mini dishwasher, coffee-maker). The bathroom has either a bath or shower and there is a separate toilet in most apartments. A hairdryer is provided. Some apartments have a second toilet. The 1 bedroom apartments have a double room with a sofa bed or two single beds in the living room. The studios have 2 single beds or a double sofa bed in the living room. Some studios have 2 single beds and a single sofa bed. The The Palais de Gouverneurs has three apartments available for people with reduced mobility and a games room for children under 6 years.
The Area
Water sports: The Sailing Academy in La Flotte (3.5 km) offers introductory or advanced courses on Optimists, dinghies, windsurfing boards and catamarans. Tennis: The Ré Tennis Club in Bois-plage (2.5km) has 2 tennis courts including 1 outdoor court. Riding: The Moulin Moreau Riding Stables in La Flotte (4 km): jumping, dressage, riding school lessons and courses for adults and children. Pony-club for children over 3 years old. Cycle paths: 80 km of cycle routes. Bicycles and scooters can be hired in Saint-Martin. The Ile de Ré is just off the west coast of France, linked to the mainland at La Rochelle by a 3 kilometre bridge. Saint Martin-de-Ré is the island’s capital, a delightful village built around a harbour sheltering fishing boats and yachts. The island has a network of well signposted lanes for walking and cycling and is beautiful at any time of year. Summers are long and hot, idyllic for those who like to swim and sail or simply walk on the beach and watch the sunset. Annual Events include: May: International Sailing Week in La Rochelle.
